How To Apply For Passport
Find out how to obtain a new US passport. You do not need one if you are in the United States and traveling from state to state. However, if you are planning to travel outside the country and you do not have one, then you will need to apply for a passport in person at your local passport office. If you already have one and it has expired, then you can renew your passport through the mail. To view these steps, see how to renew your passport.
You also will need one if a visa is required when traveling to a foreign country. Passports are only available to US citizens. If you are a green card holder or someone who is just visiting the US on an immigrant or non-immigrant visa, you will need a passport from your home country to allow you to leave and re-enter the United States and be allowed to get a visa to put in your passport so you can remain in the US on a temporary basis.
Applying for a new passport in person
If you are applying for a new passport, then you are required to do so in person using Form DS-11 if at least one of the following is true:

- You are under age 16
- Your previous US passport was issued when you were under age 16
- Your previous US passport was lost, stolen, or damaged
- Your previous US passport was issued more than 15 years ago
If you do not meet any of the requirements above, then you may be eligible to renew your passport using Form DS-82. Please note, if you live in another country (including Canada) and you are submitting Form DS-11, you must apply in person at a US embassy or consulate.
